Google is set to update the icons of Gmail, Drive, and other applications.

Google is getting ready to update the appearance of several Google Workspace apps, such as Gmail, Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Calendar, Meet, Chat, Keep, and others. The new icons are expected to feature a modern design with gradient colors and rounded edges, as shown in leaked images.

Google aims to give applications a more contemporary appearance.

Google has been implementing a similar design approach in various products, with the updated “G” icon in 2025 symbolizing the brand’s progression into the artificial intelligence era. This design style has been seen in products like Gemini, Google Photos, Google Maps, and Google Home.

The concept is now extending that language to work and productivity tools. The new icon set employs degradation to emphasize a phase closely linked to AI, with Gemini features becoming more prevalent in Google services.

The previous design, which was launched a couple of years ago, aimed to incorporate Google’s four colors into most elements. While this approach enhanced brand recognition, it resulted in many icons appearing too alike. Users of Gmail, Meet, Chat, Drive, and Calendar may find it challenging to quickly distinguish between these apps, especially on smaller screens.

What modifications

Gmail’s design update is subtle, maintaining the familiar envelope format while introducing new colors with gradient transitions.

Google Drive’s icon has undergone significant changes, with the latest version featuring green, yellow, and blue colors instead of the previous red detail. The new design retains the triangular shape but with softer edges and a fuller look, maintaining the essence of the original Drive concept.

Google Calendar should adopt a more simplified appearance in blue, reminiscent of previous versions of the application. Google Meet should maintain the camera icon but with a brighter yellow hue.

Google’s editing applications are included in the bundle as well. Google Docs is designed to maintain the document’s concept, while Sheets and Slides can adopt additional horizontal layouts that align better with the everyday usage of spreadsheets and presentations. This alteration eliminates the perception that everyone is merely distinguishable by small details.

When will the new icons be available?

There is currently no set release date for the new icons, with the rollout expected to be gradual as per Google’s usual practice.

Google may provide further information about this new visual design during Google I/O 2026, set for May 19 and 20, but details have not been confirmed yet.
