Using smart glasses while driving can result in a significant fine and a suspension of your driver’s license.
Smart glasses are becoming increasingly popular as they integrate multimedia features into lenses and frames. Recently, the Committee on Transport of the Chamber of Deputies approved amendments to Bill 19/2026 regarding the regulation of these devices while driving.
The original plan was to ban smart glasses while driving, but Mr. Gilberto Abramo suggested focusing only on devices that obstruct the driver’s vision or cause distractions while the vehicle is in motion.
The project aims to add a rule to the Brazilian Transit Code that prohibits wearable devices from obstructing visibility of the road and surroundings, applying to both existing and future models of such products.
Very attractive
If this proposal advances in Congress, drivers who are caught using smart glasses that affect their ability to drive may be subject to harsh penalties, including potential suspension of their driver’s license.
Smart glasses became popular by collecting various media content directly through their lenses and frames. Certain models enable users to make phone calls, record videos, listen to audio, and utilize AI features without needing to use a mobile device.
On more sophisticated devices, there are features that can translate text, provide information about the surroundings, and interact with real-time applications. Parliamentarians are concerned about the potential for this information to be displayed in the driver’s field of view while driving.
The text will now be reviewed by other House committees before being presented to the full assembly. For the proposal to become law, it must be approved by both deputies and senators.
